Clarence D. “MOE” Wirick, age 83, of Fredericktown, died Wednesday January 9, 2008 at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon. Clarence was born April 30, 1924 in Mount Vernon to Howard and Rhea (Hess) Wirick and had spent his lifetime in the Mount Vernon and Fredericktown areas. He served with the United States Army Air Corps during World War Two as a crewmember on a B17 bomber. Clarence was the last surviving member of the flight crew. He was retired from Pittsburgh Plate Glass Industries in Mount Vernon. In his younger days Clarence was an accomplisher baseball and softball player having played on several softball teams in the Mount Vernon area.

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge, Colonial City Moose Lodge, BPOE Elks Lodge #140 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars all in Mount Vernon.

Surviving are his children Michael Wirick, Paul Wirick, and Barbara Herndon all of California, Kathy Riehl of Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania and Kristy Royle of Mercer, Pennsylvania; a stepson Brent Wells of Westerville: several grandchildren and great grandchildren and his sister Eulalah Swank of Fredericktown. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Doris A. Wirick.

There will be no calling hours. Graveside services with military honors by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will be Friday at 2 PM at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
