Chris Chapman, age 86 of Ransom Road, Mount Vernon passed away Friday afternoon, January 26, 2007 at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon. He was born on April 23, 1920 in Huntington West Virginia, William Pearl and M. Belle (Pitts) Chapman. On January 14, 1942 he married Mary Alice Davis of Columbus, wife of 65 years.
Mr. Chapman worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad for 45 years as an engineer and retired in 1982 at the age of 62. With the railroad he was known as “Big Wheel”. Chris was a member of the Covenant Christian Church of God in Mount Vernon. He also built and operated Camp Maranatha, a Christian Youth Camp, with the help of his sons and daughters from 1969 to 1994. He was a Sergeant in the United States Army and served in WW II. He served in the Army Engineer Corp in Egypt and Italy.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; sons, Timothy L. (Kathie) Chapman and Keith A. (Julie) Chapman both of Mount Vernon; a daughter, M Charlotte (Frank) Hux of Mount Vernon; a brother, Elva A. Chapman of Delaware; a sister, Bernadine Bowles of Zanesville; and 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Crystle Ann Chapman Dix; and sisters, Mary Mulvain and Dorothy Sparrow.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, January 29, 2007 at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at the Covenant Christian Church of God with Rev. Timothy M.N. Overly officiating. Burial will follow in the Friendship Cemetery near Mount Vernon with military graveside services provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
