Charles E. Armstrong

Charles E. “Charlie” Armstrong, 77, of Galion, went to be at peace with his Lord and Savior, after an extended illness, Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 at Galion Community Hospital.
Born Oct. 4, 1934 in Galion, he was the son of the late Cleo and Isabelle Bishop Armstrong-Cole. He married Esther M. Winch Armstrong on Sept. 26, 1954 and she survives.
Charlie was a member of First United Methodist Church in Crestline and loved fishing, hunting and spending time with his sons and grandchildren. He was an avid sports fan and previously played AAA Minor League Baseball for the Cleveland Indians Farm Team. He had the honor of being named one of the top 100 athletes in North Central Ohio sports history. He coached the Leesville Babe Ruth baseball team and the Galion All-star Babe Ruth teams for many years. Charlie especially loved the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Charlie was a salesman at Castle Metals in Galion and later owned and operated Galion Metal Products and Armstrong Steel Supply. He also owned and operated Trash and Treasure Antiques with his wife and sons retiring in 2000.
In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is also survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dave and Marcie Armstrong of Zanesville and Scott and Lauri Armstrong of Harpster; one grandson, Christopher Armstrong; two granddaughters, Laura Garrett and Julia Caton and two brothers and one sister-in-law, Melvin and Marguerite Armstrong of Bucyrus and Larry Armstrong of Leesville.
He was preceded in death by one grandson, Cpl. David Armstrong; his step-father, Starling Cole, his step-sister, Carolyn Price and one sister-in-law, Sandy Armstrong.
Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012 at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home in Galion where a funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27 with Pastor Nathan Nordine officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Galion.
