Charles Albert “Al” Young

December 27, 1921 ‒ May 24, 2014

Mansfield, Ohio

MANSFIELD: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (II Timothy 4:7)

Charles Albert “Al” Young, lifelong Mansfield resident, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Saturday morning May 24, 2014 in Ohio Health MedCentral. He was 92.

Born December 27, 1921 to the late Charles Chester Young and Lela Mae (Bemiller) Young Oakleaf in Morrow County, Al was a 1941 graduate of Mansfield Senior High. He was married to the late Bobette M. (Green) Young for almost 70 years until her passing in 2012, but they are now together again.

A WWII and Korean War veteran, Al served in the US Air Force in Europe, Africa and Korea. Upon returning, he worked as a merchandiser for J.C. Penney for over 20 years and in 1985 became a security officer at MedCentral Hospital where he also worked for 20 years.

Al was a charter member of Berean Baptist Church in Mansfield where he served in many leadership capacities, including as a member of the deacon board, the board of trustees, and the choir. He was always thankful for the way God used him to encourage Pastor Dave Pound and his wife Sher to bring their ministry to Mansfield. He was also a member of American Legion Post #16 in Mansfield.

He is survived by son and daughter-in-law Bruce & Donna Young of Mansfield; two grandchildren whom he raised Kellie King and Jasen Milligan; two great-grandsons Kameron King and Devon Milligan; two sisters-in-law Dona Owen and Sheila Huff both of Mansfield; special nieces Kay “Cookie” Huff, Nicole Schopp, Courtney Schopp, Darlene Satterla, and Glenda Zimmerman; a lifelong close friend Martha Hall; and Mike King and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter at birth Susan K. Young; daughter Kathi Milligan; a brother Paul Edward Young; and a sister Marie Gordon.

A service celebrating his life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2014 in the chapel at Berean Baptist Church, 2145 Middle Bellville Rd, Mansfield, 44904, with Pastor David Pound conducting the service. Friends are encouraged to call the hour before the funeral and burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Galilean Home Ministries (an orphanage in Kentucky that touched Al’s heart) and sent in the care of the funeral home: P.O. Box 3085, Mansfield, Ohio 44904.

His family would like to thank: the wonderful staff of Sterling House for all the love and care they gave to him; the Derrenberger’s staff for all the meals and help they gave Al (better known as “Sassy”); and Berean Baptist Church and Diamond Hills Baptist Church for always being there for him.

He is home with those he loved and the One he served and loved: his Savior and King, Jesus Christ. He and Bobette are reunited and are waiting for the Great Reunion of the family.

Snyder Funeral Homes is honored to serve Al’s family and condolences to them may be left below:

  • Bruce & Family,

It was an honor to serve your family this week; Al was a special guy. My grandfather (Paul Snyder) told me some wonderful stories about Al when he was with MedCentral security, he always offered help to our funeral directors even when he didn’t have to. Please call on me if I can help with anything at all.

  • It was such an honor taking care of your father. He was so loved by us, and will truly be missed.
