LEXINGTON: Charlene “Toni” Kay Baker, 57, of Kansas City, Missouri, and formerly of Lexington, died Thursday morning March 11, 2004 in the University of Arkansas Medical Science Center, Little Rock, Arkansas, following an eight-month battle with multiple myeloma cancer and pneumonia.

She was born January 25, 1947 in Mansfield to Lewis L. and Eileen (Brumenshenkel) Levingston, and was raised in the Lexington, Bellville and Butler area.

Most importantly, Toni was a loving and devoted mother to her four sons. At the same time, she and her family shared an immense love of her family’s farm by working it alongside her grandfather.

In 1979, Kenneth, Toni’s husband of 27 years, accepted a position with his company that required the family to move to Liberty, Missouri. During this time, Toni worked various part-time jobs to help support the family.

In 1992, Toni put her love for helping others into a new career by returning to school and becoming a certified nursing assistant. In 1994 she returned to Ohio to help care for her aging father, and work in local nursing homes.

In 2000 she moved back to the Kansas City area where she purchased a home. She worked part-time at H&R Block and full-time at the US Postal Service Call Center.

She was a life member of Robert L. Castor Post #5101 V.F.W. Auxiliary, Lexington, Irvin Hiskey Unit #535 American Legion Auxiliary, Bellville, AMVETS Post #1979 Auxiliary, Kansas City, and attended Pleasant Valley Baptist Church of Liberty.

Toni was an avid reader, always toting a book with her. She loved gardening. She was a people person, always on the go. She enjoyed traveling, visiting people, playing cards, and remaining socially active in her friend’s and family’s lives. The past three years, her Yorkshire Terrier, Chipper was her constant companion.

A loving mother, and devoted grandmother, she is survived by four sons and their families Robert and Polly Baker of Wooster and their children Christopher, Mallory, Kaitlyn, Sierra, Dalen, Jarrison, and one on the way; Todd and Julie Baker of Overland Park, Kansas and their son Luke; Bret Baker, and his children Ryan and Wayne, Bret’s fiancée Michelle Kahl and her daughter Darlene all of Kansas City, Missouri; and Bart and Sheila Baker and their daughter Kathryn and another child expected.
