Cecilia Avila, 75, of Galion, died peacefully January 22, 2014 at OSU Medical Center in Columbus. She had been suffering for about a year with heart related issues. She had recently shown signs of improvement, so her passing came as quite a shock to her family.
Born to Antonio and Consuelo Sanchez on December 2, 1938, Cecilia loved to sing. Along with her husband, Simon, whom she married August 26, 1961, they formed Latin American Ministries Incorporated. As a team, “The Singing Avila’s” traveled to 16 countries in Latin America sharing God’s love through song. This has been their full-time endeavor for more than four decades focusing on evangelism and the promotion of home and foreign missions.
Cecilia is preceded in death by her aforementioned parents, one granddaughter, Rachel “Heart” Avila, and one brother, Antonio “Tony” Sanchez Junior.
She is survived by her husband Simon, of Galion, four children, Laila and Craig Zenil of Holland, Pauline and Eric Meyer of Ontario, Harry Avila of Galion and Leticia Lesseuer of Shelby. Cecilia was also the proud grandmother of Jesse and Ashley Meyer of Mansfield, Simon and Marissa Avila of Galion, Caden and Luke Lesseuer of Shelby and one great granddaughter, Cecelia “Cici” Meyer.
Cecilia was the oldest of seven children, and is survived by: Janie and Refugio Gonzalez of Arlington, TX, Joel and Star Sanchez of Albuquerque, NM, Mary and Jim Syrjala of Lyons, Mich., Christina Sanchez-Davis of Clayton, Ga., Lena and Bill King of Wyoming, Mich. and many, many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 24, 2014 from 5 pm to 8 pm at the Snyder Funeral Home Richardson Davis Chapel in Galion. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, January 25, 2014 at the St. Paul United Methodist Church, 746 Cherry St. Galion with Pastor Jeff Deel officiating. Additional visitation will start one hour prior to the funeral service at 1:30 pm. Burial will be in Iberia Cemetery.
