Carrie “Elsie” Tischer, age 97, of Mount Gilead, died Saturday evening, October 25, 2008, at the Willard Healthcare Center.

She was born in Marion County, Ohio, on January 15, 1911, the daughter of the late Henry N. Mishler and Mary M. (Roshon) Barnes.

A graduate of Mount Gilead High School in the class of 1929, Elsie furthered her education receiving a B.S. in Education from Ashland College and a M.S. in Education from Indiana University.

Enriching young minds, Elsie used her gifts teaching elementary school students for 29 years, loving each of her school kids like they were her own. She began her career at Congress Township School, then taught for Johnsville Schools, and lastly, spent 19 years at Dawsett Elementary School in Galion, until her retirement in 1976.

On May 28, 1936, Elsie married her loving husband, Harley W. Tischer. They shared over 25 wonderful years of marriage until his passing on February 10, 1962.

A woman of deep faith, Elsie was a member of the Pleasant Grove Church of Christ for the past 80 years. There she taught Sunday school and participated on many boards and committees.

Being active in the community, she was a lively participant with the Seniors on Center, a curator for the Morrow and Crawford County Historical Societies, and was on the Buckeye Girls State Staff for over 25 years. She was also a member of the Morrow County Retired Teachers Association, the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, the 40 & 8 Salon #251, and a life member of the E.B. Rinehart American Legion Auxiliary Post #754.

In 1990, Elsie received the honor of being named the Morrow County Outstanding Senior Citizen.

One moment truly cherished by Elsie was her 1966 trip to the Holy Land.

A kind and gentle woman, she was always giving and loved spending time with her family.

Elsie will be dearly missed by her daughter, Doris Nestor of New Haven; her two grandchildren: Aaron Nestor of New Haven, Andrea (Jeff) Kalinoski of Toledo; and five great grandchildren: Katlyn, Nathan, and Sean Nestor, and Alaina and Charlie Kalinoski.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Ralph Mishler, and her sister, Bertha Tischer.

Elsie’s family will greet friends on Thursday, October 30, 2008 from 11-1 p.m., at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead, where services will follow immediately at 1 p.m., with Pastor Ray Linn officiating. Burial will follow in Shauck Cemetery.
