Carol J. Barney
November 22, 1936 ‒ April 07, 2018
Carol J. Barney passed away Saturday, April 7, 2018 in Liberty of Mansfield surrounded by her family. She was 81.
She was born November 22, 1936 to parents Charles & Maragaret (Shingledecker) Humerick in Dayton, and went on to graduate from Shivers High School with the class of 1955.
On April 2, 1955, she married James L. Barney and they spent 52 years together until he passed away in 2007. Carol and James moved to the Mansfield area in 1963 where they became very active in the local Democratic Party organizations. Carol served as clerk for the Richland County Board of Elections for several years.
Very outspoken, Carol always introduced herself as “fat, sassy, mean, and nasty”, and it was never hard to know exactly what she was thinking when she was thinking it. She also loved spending time with her family and she made the time they spent together a lasting memory in which they will never forget. In spare time Carol enjoyed shopping, going to the library, and gardening.
She is survived by her grandchildren Maggie (Conor) Setley, James (Ashley) Barney, Miranda (Brandon) Jones, Aubrey (Greg) Caugherty, Kristina (Brian) Lalley, Caleb (Allison) Barney, Samantha Barney, and Tony Barney; several great grandchildren; brother-in-law Thomas Barney; and numerous close nieces and nephews in the Dayton area.
In addition to her loving husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her children Bonnie L. Mitchell, David A. Barney, and Timothy L. Barney; her sisters Shirley J. McDonald and Rosalie LaPointe.
A family gathering will take place on Friday, April 20, 2018 from 4-6 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home.
Contributions in Carol’s memory to Susan G. Komen Northeast Ohio or Alzheimer’s Association may be made at the funeral home.
