MANSFIELD- Calvin Gilbert Barrick, age 86, died Thursday, September 8, 2011.

He was born December 8, 1924 the son of the late Robert C. and Lelo (Gilbert) Barrick. Gilbert was graduated from Chesterville High School in 1942 and Ashland College in 1949.

In November of 1942 he and his lifelong good friend, Arthur Tobin, enlisted in the US Navy. Gilbert entered the Submarine Service and served aboard the USS Tang and USS Searaven during WWII. He was honored by the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. A representative of the museum made a video of Gilbert to be played at the museum for the outstanding contribution made by the crew of the USS Tang during WWII.

Graduating with a teachers certificate, he chose a career as a purchasing agent and purchasing manager. Gilbert was employed by several industries including Stevens Manufacturing and Dominion Electric. He retired from Hamilton Beach Inc. in Washington, North Carolina.

A polite, pleasant man, Gilbert enjoyed playing cards with good friends. In later years he enjoyed crossword puzzles.

Gilbert and his wife attended Lexington High School basketball games with family and friends. He followed the Ohio State Buckeye football team and Cleveland Indians, Browns and Cavaliers.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Avalene (Sautter) Barrick of Mansfield; daughter Pat (Wesley) Glenn of West Jordan, Utah, son Keith Barrick of Lexington; grandchildren Amy (Robert) Hoskings of Murray, Utah, Natalie McCray of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Keith J. (Jennifer) Williams of Mansfield; great grandchildren Wyatt and Hannah Hoskings, Chloe McCray, Benjamin and Sarah Williams; brothers Robert (Lois) Barrick of Evergreen Colorado and Willard (Jackie) Barrick of Mt. Gilead; brother-in-law Lowell Weller and sister-in-law Mary Barrick.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by brothers Delano and Harlan Barrick and his sister Eloise Weller.

The Barrick family will receive friends Sunday, September 11, 2011 from 5-7pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:30 am. Gilbert’s 1st cousin Rev. John T. Ball will officiate and burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Chesterville.
