C. Robert “Bob” Gardner, age 92, of Mount Vernon, died Friday January 8, 2010 at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon following a brief illness. Bob was born December 19, 1917 in Mount Gilead to Hoy and Nellie (Evans) Gardner. He graduated from Fredericktown High School in 1937 and had spent most of his lifetime in the Mount Vernon area. During World War Two, Bob served with the United States Army in New Caledonia, Australia. He was a retired master machinist having worked at Cooper Bessemer Company in Mount Vernon for 45 years.

He attended the Beulah United Methodist Church at Bangs, was a member of Mount Zion Lodge #9 Free and Accepted Masons in Mount Vernon, the Colonial City Moose Lodge in Mount Vernon and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Mount Vernon.

Surviving are his wife Dorothy (Stumbaugh) Gardner whom he married August 15, 1942; his daughters Diane Bash and Doris (Richard) Ressler both of Mount Vernon and Pat (Ed Keough) Jeffries of Parma; 3 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and his brother Dale Gardner of Mount Vernon. Besides his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his brother John Gardner and his sister Pearl Pipes.

Friends may call Tuesday January 12, 2010 from 5pm to 7pm at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 East High Street, Mount Vernon where Mount Zion Masonic Lodge #9 will conduct memorial services following the calling hours. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11am at the funeral home. Burial with military honors by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
