Boyd C. “Bud” McCalla, 84, of Conroe, TX formerly of Mount Vernon, passed away Thursday, March 1, 2018 at the Heartis Conroe Senior Living Center. He was born February 2, 1934 in Mount Vernon to the late Harold and Irene (Boerstler) McCalla.

Bud was a 1952 graduate of Gambier High School.   He honorably served his country in the Army from 1956-1958 at Fort Polk, LA.  After his military service, he attended and graduated from the Columbus Barber College.  Bud owned and operated his own barber shop, Bud’s Barber Shop on E. Chestnut Street for over 40 years in Mount Vernon.

Bud was a longtime member of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church.   He was an extremely active Freemason.  He was a member of the Mount Zion Lodge #9 F. & A.M. since 1958, where he served as the Worshipful Master; Clinton Commander #5 where he served as Eminent Commander; member of the Ohio Priory #18 as a York Rite Cross of Honor; the Knox Chapter #236 Order of Eastern Star, where he served as Worthy Patron three times; the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons Clinton Chapter #26 where he served as High Priest; the Royal & Select Masons, Kinsman Council #76 where he served as Illustrious Master, and served as the Grand Representative to the Grand Council of Hawaii for 17 years.

Bud is survived by his son, Mark (Denise) McCalla of The Woodlands, TX; two grandchildren, Sarah and Nicole; step son, Dean (Colleen) Donaldson of Mount Vernon, OH; step daughters, Charlotte (Ian) Watson of Mount Vernon, OH and Carolyn (Nick) Finke of Wyoming, OH; 6 step grandchildren and 12 step great grandchildren; sisters, Dorothea Fyffe of Lexington, KY, Marilyn Young of Mount Vernon, OH and Margaret “Maggie” Frost of Mount Vernon, OH; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Donaldson McCalla.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday June 12th at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, Mount Vernon, where a memorial service celebrating the life of Bud will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday June 13th. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.  Mount Zion Lodge # 9 F. & A.M. and the Knox Chapter #236 Order of Eastern Star will hold their memorial ceremony following the visitation on the 12th.

  • To Dottie, Marilyn, and the McCalla Family: More recently, I saw Bud and his wife Nancy, at The Ohio Eastern Star Home, and after Nancy’s death, it was always a pleasure to see Bud when I visited my family there. Bud was a real icon in the community, and he is sadly missed. We send our deepest sympathy to the entire family.
