Billy R. Graves, age 80, of Mount Vernon, passed away on Sunday, December 16, 2018 in Mount Vernon, Ohio. He was born on May 23, 1938, in Columbia, KY to the late William Graves and Bernice (Dixon) Graves Keyes. Bill served in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 – 1959 and then the Marine Corps Reserves until 1962.

He had previously been employed with Cooper Industries, the Mount Vernon Developmental Center and McDonnell Douglas. Bill enjoyed collecting antiques, golfing and watching his beloved Cleveland Indians.

He is survived by his three children, Todd (Cherie) Graves of Albertville, AL, Mark (Gidget) Graves of Gahanna, OH and Beth (Darren) Brasseur of Mansfield, OH; five grandchildren, Ashlie Graves of Belville, OH, Alison (Derek) Fisher of Mansfield, OH, Kayla (Randy) Spade and Rachael (Zach) Maxey of Jeromesville, OH and Kyrie Purdy of Huntsville, AL; five great-grandchildren, Greyson, Aliyah, Karsyn, Elly and Ryan; a brother, David (Gloria) Graves of Mount Vernon and a sister, Susie (Ed) Patton of Lafayette, Indiana.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by four sisters, Shirley McPeek, Jeanette Lahrman, Anna Oswalt and Charlotte “Chotsie” Cline and a brother, Rodney Graves.

A Celebration of Life service with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will be held on Thursday, December 20, 2018 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Fisher House Foundation,, an organization that builds comfort homes where service members and veterans of the armed services and their families receiving care can stay free of charge, while a loved one is in the hospital. These homes are located at military and VA medical centers around the world.
