Bettye L. Monk, age 74, of Mount Vernon passed away on Wednesday afternoon, April 6, 2011 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on August 20, 1936 in Springfield, Tennessee, daughter of the late Francis and Eunice (Arms) Taylor.

Bettye was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Mount Vernon. She retired from the Knox County Department of Aging as the Supervisor of the Foster Grandparent program at the Mount Vernon Developmental Center for over 30 years. Bettye had also worked that the Mohican Youth Camp, Sears Department Store, and Martin Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed bowling, doing cross stitch, crocheting, collecting blue glass, bird houses, and Longaberger baskets.

Bettye is survived by her daughters, Carmen (Henry) Allen and Linda (Greg Blubaugh) Green of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Lianna Monk, Kyle Theibert, Amy Theibert, Kristi Allen, Christopher Blubaugh, and Travis Blubaugh; 10 great grandchildren; sisters, Laverne Riggins of Clarksville, TN and Linda Slatten of Carriere, MS; and her closest friend, Betty Stricker of Gray TN.

In addition to her parents, Bettye was preceded in death by her husband, Merrill “Sonny” Monk on April 10, 1982 and a son, Mark Monk on April 24, 1992.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of a memorial service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 East High St., Mount Vernon with Pastor Susan Stevens officiating. A private inurnment will be held at Mound View Cemetery.
