Betty L. Canterbury

August 26, 1942 ‒ October 18, 2007

Edison, Ohio

Betty L. Canterbury, age 65, of Edison, died unexpectedly on Thursday, October 18, 2007, at the Morrow County Hospital.

She was born in Delaware, Ohio, on August 26, 1942, the daughter of the late William and Grace Bowen Curtis.

Betty worked as a secretary for Gruman Flexble Steel in Delaware and Weller Sales in Worthington. Later, she was a clerk for the Village of Edison, a teller at the First Knox Bank in Edison, a cook at McDonald’s, and lastly was again a secretary at Ohashi in Sunbury.

After being introduced by her sister, Betty fell in love with her loving fiancé and companion, Richard Casto. Together they were members of the Rod-n-tiques car club of Mount Gilead and shared over thirteen wonderful years together.

“A super bowler,” Betty had scored as high as 289 and she enjoyed many years on a traveling bowling team that went as far as Las Vegas.

An excellent cook, just talking about Betty’s cooking made her family’s mouth water. Some favorites were her spaghetti, casseroles, chili, and sugar cookies, all of which she made without needing a recipe.

Good with her hands, Betty loved spoiling her family with crafts, such as quillows and paintings.

“The Queen of the castle,” Betty had her own unique way of being particular as everything was to be in its’ place. Though she could be feisty, Betty had a big roar and a soft bite.

Each year for Christmas, Betty would make hundreds of homemade Christmas cookies with icing with her grandchildren and there are numerous photos to prove how much fun they had.

Very sincere, Betty gave of herself to everyone. “She was a great mother, grandmother, and companion to Richard.”

She will be missed by her fiancé Richard, son: Paul Canterbury of Cardington; daughter: Rebecca Mae Dodge of Delaware; three grandchildren: Justin David, Tara Louise, and Kaitlyn Marie Canterbury; step-son: Randy Casto of Johnsville; step-daughter: Amy Scott of Mount Gilead; four step-grandchildren: Austin Casto, Audrey, Mackenzie, and Garrett Scott; two brothers: Danny (Phyllis) Curtis of Cardington, Jerry (Ruby) Curtis of Ashley; and two sisters: Patricia (Tom) Casto of Mount Gilead, and Sue (Lee) Price of Cocoa, Florida.

Including her parents, Betty was preceded in death by two brothers: Richard and Jimmy Curtis; and three sisters: Mary Jones, Marilyn and Vicky Curtis.

Her family will greet friends on Monday from 2 – 5 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 S. Main St., Mt. Gilead, where a memorial service will follow at 5:00 p.m. with Pastor Joe Blevins officiating. Burial will follow in Rivercliff Cemetery.
