Betty Briggle Smythe Freshwater

Word has been received of the death of Betty Briggle Smythe Freshwater, 92, Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at Otterbein North Shore Retirement Center in Lakeside, where she had been a resident since 2010.

She was born in Ankenytown to Cora and Edgar Briggle and grew up in the Fredericktown area. She was a graduate of Fredericktown High School, Muskingum College, and The Ohio State University in 1956 and 1967 with a PhD in Human Ecology. She taught home economics in Fredericktown High School, and was a past matron of Ann Hill Chapter #81 OES.

She spent most of her teaching career at Ohio Wesleyan University, and was instrumental in establishing the OWU Early Childhood Center. She was a long time member of French Club, Book Club, and several home economist groups in Delaware County.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, George Smythe and George Freshwater.

She is survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews; and dear friends, Christi Divelbiss Dunfee and P.A. Dunfee of Lakeside; Jake Dunfee and family of Lakeside, and Corie Dunfee and family of Delaware.

A memorial celebration will be held Monday, November 10, 2014 at 1:00 pm at William Street United Methodist Church where Betty was a long-time, active member.

  • Betty was one on my professors in the Home Economics/Child Development Department at Ohio Wesleyan in the early 60s and I was fortunate to become re-acquainted with her when I returned to Delaware to live in 2004. My sympathy to her family and friends.
