On Monday December 8, 2008, Bessie F. Wise age 97, of 1451 Gambier Road, Mount Vernon, passed on to her heavenly new life.
Bessie was born August 30, 1911 at Dutch Run near Warsaw, Ohio to Calvin and Mina (Kanuckle) Hart. She worked at O’Neils Department Store in Akron and Coshocton before she and her husband moved to Mount Vernon and purchased the William Brown Jewelry business, at 102 South Main Street, in 1953, and started Wise Jewelers, Inc. This jewelry store remains the oldest, continually operated, jewelry business in the state of Ohio. Bessie was the secretary, buyer and clerk for the jewelry store for 41 years.
She was a graduate of Warsaw High School as salutatorian in 1930, and attended Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky and also Akron Business College in Akron, Ohio. Bessie was a member of the Soroptimist Club in Mount Vernon, the Mount Vernon Business and Professional Womens Club, and a member of the Fellowes Society of the Mount Vernon Nazarene University. She was a faithful member of the Church of the Nazarene for 82 years, where she served as financial secretary for 15 years. She was a patient, kind and gentle lady and loved not only selling jewelry but repairing pearl necklaces. Bessie loved living with her friends at The Living Center for 6 years and loved spending time studying the Bible, sharing her faith and spending time with her family.
Bessie is survived by her son, Donald E. Wise of Mount Vernon; a daughter Linda (Richard) White of Mount Vernon; five granddaughters, Debi (White) Lehman of Pine Grove, California, Deanna (White) Curry of Oxford, Ohio, Heather Wise of Mount Vernon, Julie (Wise) Stack of Walbridge, Ohio and Lori (Wise) McNicholas of Stewart, Florida; 10 great grandchildren, Erin, Emily and Abigail Lehman of Pine Grove, California, Sarah and Molly Curry of Oxford, Ohio, Anna Neipling of Mount Vernon, Ellie Stack of Walbridge, Ohio and Michael, Matthew, and Mitchell McNicholas of Stuart, Florida; 3 sisters Esther Billingsley of Mount Vernon, Faith Giffin of New Castle, Ohio and Bonnie Mortine of Newcomerstown, Ohio. Other survivors are many nieces, nephews and a special friend Marie Minor of Mount Vernon. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 42 years, Russell E. Wise, 2 sisters Edith (Hart) Miller and Augusta (Hart) Lower and 4 brothers Ernest Hart, Wilmer Hart, Donis Hart, and Marvin Hart.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 1 PM at the First Church of the Nazarene, 807 Coshocton Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio with Rev. Russell Downs officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the church Thursday 2 hours prior to the funeral service.
