Mount Vernon, Ohio
Bert Wabeke died at his home in Mount Vernon on Tuesday morning, June 8, 2010 at age 95, after becoming stricken with cancer.
He was born on November 15, 1914 to Dutch parents in Pretoria, South Africa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emily (Squires) of Grand Forks, ND, his parents and sister, Kitty.
Bert is survived by his daughter, Betsy (Ed) Hayes; grandsons, Chris Gilbert, Peter (Karola) Gilbert, and Tom Hayes; and great grandchildren, Celina, Kaela, Samuel, and Emma.
Bert became a US citizen at age 7 in Seattle, WA. He served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy in WW II and worked for much of his life as a political analyst for the US Department of State, as a Foreign Service Officer.
His ashes will be buried near East Northfield, MA, where he and Emily had their first home after being married in 1941. Bert lived in the Washington, DC area for most of his life, but moved to Mount Vernon after Emily’s death to be near his daughter.
He never lost the formal habits of a much-earlier age. His old-fashioned, gentlemanly courtesy, and dress code endeared him to everyone he met. His wit, charm, and good spirits will be missed and his memory treasured.
