Benson K. “Ben” Beaver

November 23, 1921 ‒ March 03, 2009

Sunbury, Ohio

Benson K. Beaver, age 87 of Sunbury and longtime area farmer died early Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on November 23, 1921 in Sunbury to the late Howard and Nellie (Baker) Beaver. A graduate of Sunbury High School in 1938, he attended Otterbein University and was drafted into the US Army in 1942. Ben courageously served his country during WW II, participating in the Pacific Theater.

He returned to the family farm after the war and married his devoted wife of almost 63 years: Genevieve (Spearman). Together they remained on the family farmstead their entire marriage, raising a family, crops, and livestock. He worked the land with Allis Chalmers machinery and Jersey cows roamed the fields.

A determined and meticulous farmer, he took pride in the way he farmed and was eager to adapt to new farming methods. He committed himself to doing things the correct way and would work to do whatever necessary to do so.

Whether moving a tractor or parking the car, he believed in getting close or in his words “go till you hit it” as evidenced by his barn and car doors. He could fix anything with a sledge hammer and bailing wire. Not a great singer, he did his best at singing old folk songs and felt that cows milked better when hearing him sing.

Ben was a community steward of the area, serving as a trustee of Berkshire Township for 21 years, on the Regional Planning Commission, Delaware Rural Electric Board Trustee from 1983 until 1989, a member of the Hartford Fair Board, and BST & G Fire Board.

He was a lifelong member of the Rural Chapel United Methodist Church and the former Berkshire United Methodist Church, and a 50 year member of the American Legion Post No 457 and Knights of Pythias William Lodge #556.

He took up golfing at the age of 65, was a fan of OSU sports, and held a keen interest in the Civil War. He will be remembered for his integrity, honesty, and as a man of his word.

Ben adored his family who survive him: wife Genevieve, children: Pam D’huyvetter, Penny Grandominico, Sherry Nagy all of Sunbury, Scott (Svetlana) Beaver of Galena, Kathy (Jim) Kappenhagen of Sunbury, seven Grandchildren: Jeff, Stephanie, Tiffany, Lisa, Justine, Dahria, Andrew, five Great-grandchildren, brothers: John of Winterhaven, FL, Dick (Grace) of Galena, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by sisters: Ruth Lewis, Georgianna Hall, and brother Robert.

The family would like to thank Dr. Tom Hubbell and HomeReach Hospice for their special care of Ben.
