Bennie L. James

October 05, 1926 ‒ May 03, 2008

Mount Gilead, Ohio

Benjamin “Bennie” Loren James, age 81, of Mount Gilead passed away Saturday afternoon, May 3, 2008, at Morrow Manor Nursing Center in Chesterville.

He was born at home on October 5, 1926 in Morrow County, the son of the late Benjamin M. and Dorothy D. Loren James. Bennie graduated from Mount Gilead High School in 1945.

Bennie served in the U.S. Army from January 1946 through March 1947. He took medical training in Fort Houston, Texas, becoming a Medical Technician as well as a rifleman. He worked in a hospital in Italy, taking care of the wounded as they arrived. Bennie was given several decorations including the Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

Upon completion of his service, Bennie returned home to Mount Gilead. He started working for Dr. Nathan Tucker, M.D., originator of medicine known as “asthma specific” which was sold worldwide.

Later, he worked at the Morrow County Engineer’s office as a surveyor for Justin Early. Bennie then was employed at the Morrow County Garage until his retirement, where he became a master of all county roads throughout Morrow County.

In his spare time, Bennie lived to experience the outdoors, with hunting and fishing being two of his passions. He also spent many hours tending to his flower and vegetable gardens, which were sure to be overflowing with tomato plants.

He will be missed by his two sisters: Patricia L. Lyons of Mount Gilead and Joan M. Hager of Holland, Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Beckie Lyons, who would always find time to spend talking with him and surprise him with flowers from the yard.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law: Francis D. Lyons and William W. Hager.

His family will observe private graveside services with military honors provided by VFW Post 8054 and AmVets Post 87 in Rivercliff Cemetery with Chaplain Dennis Barnhart officiating.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Snyder Funeral Homes of Mount Gilead.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Seniors on Center, 41 West Center Street, Mount Gilead, Ohio 43338.
