Awretha M. Walker
March 14, 1916 ‒ July 30, 2001
LEXINGTON: Awretha M. Walker, age 85, formerly of Delaware Street, Lexington, died Monday morning July 30, 2001 in Lexington Court Care Center following a short illness.
She was born March 14, 1916 at Little Washington, was graduated from Johnsville High School in 1934, and completed training as a licensed practical nurse at Mid Ohio Nursing School.
Awretha retired in 1978, following 25 years as a nurse with MedCentral Mansfield Hospital where she worked in central supply, maternity and delivery.
A lifelong Lexington area resident, she was a member of the Ohio LPN Association, Lexington Church of Christ, the Golden Rule Sunday School Class, Go Ye Missions, and the Wednesday Morning Bible Study. For ten years, Awretha served as secretary of Child Evangelism.
She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law Gloria Ann & Kenneth Baker, Janet A. & Kip Calendine, and Ethel G. & Russell “Corky” Hoffman all of Lexington, and Lee L. & Edward Spitzer of Naples, FL; 10 grandchildren and their spouses Jim Baker of Elkhart, IN, Ray & Melody Baker of Amelia, Clint & Teresa Baker of Bellville, Tim & Michelle Baker of Hilliard, Jodi & Neal Smith of Overland Park, KS, Dr. Stephen & Kara Calendine of Colorado Springs, CO, Jill & Jim Maihle of Fredericktown, Dr. Philip & Bethany Calendine of Westerville, Tonia Spitzer of Live Oak, FL and Staff Sergeant Eddie Spitzer stationed with the U.S Marine Corps in Texas; and 24 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband James A. Walker on April 7, 1978; her father Wilice Straub; and her mother Blanche (Shafer) Straub Huvler Raney.
Friends may call Wednesday August 1, 2001 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 am in Lexington Church of Christ, 230 Delaware Street, Lexington. Burial will follow in Lexington Cemetery.
