  • My condolences to all who knew and loved Avis, but especially to Rob, Theresa, Ronda, Cecil and Todd who I grew up with in the same neighborhood. Avis used to ask me to babysit, and yes, her home was spotless and beautiful. Avis too was beautiful, both inside and out. I can remember looking at her and thinking, “That must be what a real woman should look and act like.” I was born a tomboy, so there was no hope to ever coming close to her beauty. Her trim figure wrapped in trendy styles, her warm smile, her kindness. She was so non-critical too. It’s funny how memories come flooding back if you just take a moment to reflect. I felt comfortable with her and around her, even though we were exact opposites in many ways. Not everybody can come across in that way, but Avis was classy in the truest sense. I loved visiting Avis’ home. I felt loved and accepted for who I was, and enjoyed being in her presence.

My mother went to her heavenly home back in 2002, and so I understand the pain of losing a mom, and because Alzheimer’s look away the “real” Avis so many years ago, one could say this is a second loss of the same family member. So Rob, Theresa, Ronda, Cecil and Todd, my heart goes out to you all. And your mom and my mom are most likely enjoying an interesting chat about the old neighborhood of years gone by while uniquely redecorating her mansion in only the way your mom’s eye could do. My heartfelt prayers are with you all. Diane (Perkins) Strong
