Arthur K. Irons, 75, of Mount Gilead died early Sunday morning May 20, 2007 at the Heartland Nursing Center in Marion.

He was born in Royal Oak, Michigan, on October 25, 1931, the youngest of four siblings of the late Raymond R. and Nellie W. (Wolford) Irons.

At Mount Gilead High School, Arthur developed his love of sports where he played football and basketball and was Captain of the 1949 basketball team. He was a graduate of the Mount Gilead High School Class of 1949.

Immediately following graduation, Arthur joined the U.S. Army on July 22, 1949, along with his brother Alvin Irons, who became members of the 2nd Engineer Combat Battalion. Following boot camp, both Arthur and Alvin were sent to Korea at the beginning of the Korean Conflict. Arthur was involved heavily at the Battle of Kunu-ri and was discharged on September 4, 1952, having attained the rank of SFC-RA-Engr.

On February 15, 1953, Arthur married Patricia R. Lawrence, and together they celebrated 53 years of marriage this past February.

Arthur began his working career at the H.P.M. Corporation, followed by Peabody Galion, as a sales representative for many years. Later, he worked for the Gledhill and Covert Manufacturing Company’s, and he ended his career at the Mount Gilead Water Department.

He was a member of the 2nd Engineer’s Veterans Club, the Korean War Vets, Masonic Lodge # 206, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, the Golden Retriever Club of Ohio, and was a 66 year member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Arthur is survived by his three daughters: Pamela C. (Eric) Hoffman of Richwood, Lindy S. (Patrick) Sens of Marion, and Leisa R. (Rich) Fellows of Shelby; his son: Bradley K. (Catherine) Irons of Marion; six grandchildren: Hilari (Jeff) Wulfeck, Lance E. Hoffman, Sarah L. Fate, Nicole D. Irons, Zachary A. Irons, and Jacob R. Fellows; and by his brother: Alvin Jay Irons of Wilmington, Delaware.

In addition to his parents, Art was preceded in death by his brother: Allan Ray Irons; and sister: Alice Marie Irons.

The family will greet friends on Tuesday from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 North Main Street, Mount Gilead, where Masonic services will immediately follow at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church, with Pastor Bruce Hartley officiating. Burial with military honors provided by V.F.W. Post 8054 and AmVets Post 87 will follow in Rivercliff Cemetery.
