Arnold Raymond “Buzz” Beatty

November 29, 1939 ‒ April 18, 2009

Van Buren, AR formerly of Marengo, Ohio

Arnold Raymond “Buzz” Beatty, age 69, longtime Marengo grocer and community steward died Saturday, April 18, 2009 at Peachtree Hospice in Van Buren, Arkansas.

He was born on November 29, 1939 in Marengo. A graduate of Marengo High School in 1958, he spent the majority of his life in the grocery business, beginning as a stock clerk at the age of 13 and spanning the next 50 years.

He was a Marengo resident for 66 years, until he moved to Van Buren, Arkansas to be near to his daughter and her family. For 30 years Buzz owned and operated the Marengo Country Market until his retirement in 2002, where he considered his longtime patrons, not customers, but true friends. Generous to a fault, he often extended credit to those in need receiving only a handshake promise in return, embellishing the true meaning of friendship.

Recent winters were spent in Tamiami Village, Fort Myers, Florida, where he enjoyed pitching horse shoes and the other park activities.

A member of the Marengo United Methodist Church and Heritage United Methodist Church in Van Buren, AR, he also volunteered for the Heritage Food Pantry.

Dedicated to the Marengo Market, there was little free time for hobbies. Retirement allowed him time to spend with his precious grandchildren, earning him the title of which he was most proud, that of being a special grandfather. Giving and always dependable, he was loved and will be missed by his community and family.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years: Becky (Ridenour), parents: Raymond and Leola (Geckley) Beatty of Mt. Gilead, daughter: Melaine (Scott) Duffey of Van Buren, AR, son: Brent Beatty and companion Dr. Scott Mackey of Columbus, grandchildren: Christopher, Laura, and Brian Duffey, sisters: Muretta Roth of Marion, Beth (Chuck) Simpson of Mt. Gilead, and a community of friends.

Friends may call Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 at the Family Life Center of the Marengo United Methodist Church, 8 N. Main St., Marengo. Funeral services will be held in the church sanctuary Wednesday 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Sue Antolik officiating, burial will follow in Marengo Cemetery.
