Anna Kathryn Deppen, 91, of Galion, died Friday, Apr. 3, 2009 at Magnolia Terrace in Galion where she has resided the last eight years.
Born Mar. 15, 1918 in Tiffin, she was the daughter of the late Alton G. Sheffer and Agnes T. Wittman Sheffer. She was preceded in death on Apr. 7, 1994 by her husband, Howard Leon Deppen, whom she married on Mar. 15, 1941.
She was a graduate of Bloomville Township High School in 1935 and attended Bowling Green State Normal School.
She was a member of First United Church of Christ in Galion where she was a member of Bethany Circle, taught Sunday school and served as Sunday school superintendent. She also started the first vacation Bible school and was the first woman elected to Church Consistory. She was a volunteer with Contact of Crawford County; a member of Crawford County and Ohio Retired Teachers Associations and a charter member of Rural Mothers Club. She started teaching at a one room school in Seneca County and retired in 1975 from Galion Public Schools after 11 years.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John Lee and Arleine Deppen of Trumbull, Conn. and James Howard and Ruth Anne Deppen of Ashland; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Louise and J. Douglas Court of Galion, Ruth Ann and Fred Engleson of Farmington, Minn.; ten grandchildren, Deanna Paul Lee of Catonsville, Md., Jeffrey Court of Galion, Benjamin Brandi Court of Cuyahoga Falls, Jonathan Christine Court of Dover, Jodi Brent Gunderson of Minneapolis, Shari John Lott of New Jersey, Keli Engleson of Belize, Dr. Krisanna Deppen of Columbus, Joseph Deppen of Marietta, Anthony Deppen of Ashland; nine great-grandchildren, Edward Lee, Avery Lee, Julie Court, Mary Janet Court, Danielle Court, Anna Court, Samuel Court, Madison Court and Harper Lott; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Wilbur and Louise Sheffer of Lake Wales, Fla., Rev. Paul and Marilyn Deppen of Elmore and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Dorothy and Ed Levesque of Leesburg, Fla., Dr. Mary Zellner of Penney Farms, Fla. and one sister-in-law, Edith Sheffer of Galion.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Sheffer and Irvin Sheffer; a grandson, Thomas Alton Deppen and a granddaughter-in-law, Shannon Court.
Friends may call from 12 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Apr. 5, 2009 at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Apr. 6, 2009 at First United Church of Christ with Rev. Samuel J. Buehrer officiating. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Bloomville
