Ann G. Sutherland, age 80, of Mount Gilead, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2020, at her residence following a brief illness.

She was born on August 8, 1939, in Dickenson County, VA, to the late Ernest B. and Ettie M. (Hess) Hamon. Ann graduated in 1958, from Haysi High School.

On her 19th birthday Ann married the love of her life, Adrian C. Sutherland, just outside of Haysi, VA.

For many years, Ann worked for North Electric which became ITT North as a cable operator.

Ann loved tending to the needs of her home. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and had many flowers throughout her home. Ann also enjoyed listening to Blue Grass music and could often be found at festivals dancing to the songs. With a love for the outdoors, Ann and Adrian loved to camp at their favorite spot in Warsaw, OH. The bargain hunter in Ann enjoyed shopping at garage and yard sales. Ann loved spending time with her family. She was always open to sharing her love with them. Most of all, Ann loved going on sister trips and playing cards.

Left to cherish her memory include her husband, Adrian; daughter, Rhonda (Allen Gay) Sutherland-Gay of Maryville, TN; grandchildren: Jessica (Shane) Ford of Maryville, TN and Jeremy Hershner of Alcoa, TN; great grandchildren: Tristin, Jaxon, and Riley Ford, Hunter and Talyn Hershner; brother, Jimmy Hamon of Marion; sisters: Lois Mullins of Haysi, VA, Betty Slay of Athens, Berneice VanHouten of Cardington, Rita Hamon of Fort Washington, MD, and Judy Mosher of Mount Gilead; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Ernest and Ettie; and brothers: Ray and Beacher Hamon.

The family will be holding a private service to honor, celebrate, and remember the abundant contributions she made to all in her lifetime.

  • Lois Mullins and the Ann Gale Sutherland family. We are so sorry for the loss of your dear sister. It is hard to give up a sibling. I know because I had to suffer the loss of my next older than me brother Earnest Gale Rice in 2004. The Haysi High School Class of 1958 grieves also as Ann Gale is the 40th member to our call to leave us. We will pray that God will ease your pain in the long days ahead, He is our present help in time of trouble.
