Alma Roberts

June 28, 1927 ‒ April 27, 2020

Mansfield, Ohio

MANSFIELD: Alma Roberts, 92, (mother of Joseph Samuel (Sam) Roberts and grandmother of Joseph (Joe) Roberts) of Mansfield passed away Monday morning, April 27, 2020 following an extended illness.

Alma was born June 28, 1927 in Coxton, Kentucky.  She married Joseph Roberts on December 27, 1947.  Alma was a member of the First Baptist Church in Orlando, Florida until she relocated to Mansfield, Ohio to be with her son, daughter-in-law and only grandson and his family.  She attended Berean Baptist Church when she moved to Mansfield.  Alma worked as a nurse’s aide for Lutheran Haven Nursing Home in Orlando, Florida.

Alma led a simple life embracing her role as homemaker while raising her three sons along with Joseph.  She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and has left family members treasured items from her craft.  Family and friends loved and appreciated her home style cooking. Alma was an amazing cook, preparing the best southern fried chicken dinners with homemade biscuits.  Each Christmas season she made homemade egg custard and peanut butter roll candy. We are fortunate that she passed these recipes on to her granddaughter-in-law Kendra with whom she shared a special bond.  So along with so many other precious memories of Alma, her family will continue her Christmas traditions by creating and sharing her holiday favorites for her family and friends.

Alma’s faith and love for her family was the center of her joy.  She was a proud mother of 3 sons, Sam, and twins Jerry and Terry.  Alma was a beloved mother-in-law to Sam’s wife Sherry and often said she was the daughter she never had.   She cherished her role as a grandmother to Joe and was never short on words when it came to telling everyone how proud she was of him for all of his accomplishments as well as for the husband he was to Kendra and father he was to her great grandchildren Sophia and Sam.  A true bonus in Alma’s life was to be part of the lives of her beloved great grandchildren who fondly called her “Mamaw Jane”.

She is survived by her children Sam (Sherry) Roberts of Mansfield; Terry Roberts of Orlando, Florida; grandson Joe (Kendra) Roberts of Cincinnati; great grandchildren Sophia and Samuel Roberts; nephews Charles H. Earls, Jr., Jim Dixon, Robert Roberts, and niece Sheila Sellers; as well as numerous extended family.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph S. Roberts, Sr. who passed away in 1978; her son Jerry Roberts who passed away in 1998; parents Charles Earls and Maude (Howard) Earls Barker; siblings Charles and Harold Earls.

Her family would like to thank the Lexington Court and the Waterford for the special care Alma received at these facilities.   A heartfelt thanks of gratitude go to nurses Lori from Lexington Court and Katy from Hospice of North Central Ohio for the outstanding and loving care given to Alma.

Family graveside services will be held at a later date in Woodhaven Memorial Park near Knoxville, Tennessee.

The Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home is serving the Roberts family.
