Alice I. Hunter Tannehill

November 04, 1933 ‒ July 05, 2013

Delaware, Ohio

Alice Tannehill, 79, was born Alice Hjelden on a farm near Brinsmade, North Dakota, on Nov. 4, 1933. She died July 5, 2013.

She was one of seven siblings. Her mother died when she was small. The children lived with foster parents, who neglected them. When Alice was eleven, state officials discovered the situation and transferred the children to the North Dakota Children’s Home in Fargo. A few months later, she was taken into the home of her Sunday School teacher and was later adopted by William and Grace Hunter. Over the years the Hjelden children kept in touch. They had a reunion in Fargo in 1992.

Alice met her future husband, Robert Tannehill, in a church youth group in Bismarck, ND. They fell in love in high school and maintained their relationship through college years, even though they went to different colleges. They were married Aug. 13, 1955.

Alice earned a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Macalester College, St. Paul, MN. She taught kindergarten, nursery school (as part of the Stork’s Nest Nursery School), and Head Start classes. During the early years of marriage she cared for three small children while her husband did seven years of graduate school.

Loyal and courageous, Alice shared adventures with her husband. With two small children and a third on the way, she lived in an isolated German village while her husband attended a German university. In later years they shared a mission trip to Bolivia to help a Christian school and did tent camping in Alaska.

Since moving to Delaware, OH, in 1966, Alice was very active in her church, was a member of PEO, was a board member of the Delwood Children’s Home, and was an early supporter of Family Promise of Delaware County, a ministry to homeless families. She enjoyed bird watching and was known for two special crafts: braiding wool rugs and jelly making.

Alice’s children are Grace (Allen) Suddeth of Glen Ridge, NJ, Celia Tannehill (Chris Ecker) of Severance, CO, and Paul (Kathy) Tannehill of Radnor, OH. Her grandchildren are Aubrey Hollaman, F. Ian Hollaman, Margaret Brown, Nicole and Patrick Suddeth, and Kirsten and William Ecker. There are five great grandchildren: Benjamin, Jocey, and Danika Brown, and Cecelia and Scott Hollaman. The great grandchildren all live in Colorado. Alice is also survived by two sisters from her birth family, Gloria Wang of Fargo, ND, and Evelyn Beall of Olympia, WA, by her adopted brother, Robert Hunter of Waseca, MN, and by her husband.

A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, July 13, at William St. United Methodist Church, 28 W. William St., Delaware, with Pastor Julie Carmean officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service. A luncheon will follow the service.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to William St. United Methodist Church or Family Promise of Delaware County, 39 N. Washington St., Delaware, OH 43015.
