September 01, 1954 ‒ June 22, 2007
Alfred R. Jordan, age 52, of Chesterville, was released from pain on Friday afternoon, June 22, 2007, surrounded by his family at his residence.
He was born in Mount Gilead, Ohio, on September 1, 1954, the son of Mildred Bowers Jordan Stone of Mount Gilead and the late Bruce Jordan. Al graduated from Highland High School in the Class of 1972.
On March 3, 1973, Al married his loving wife of over 34 years, Deborah Sutherland Jordan, whom he married at the Chesterville United Methodist Church where they had attended church.
He worked as a welder at several shops until he began working at H.P.M. where he worked for over 25 years. As a second job, Al also worked as a brick mason for many years. When he wasn’t working, Al volunteered his time as a fireman and baseball coach.
Very skilled with his hands, Al taught himself the talents of being a stone mason, playing the guitar, making jewelry, woodworking, hunting, carpentry, and an architect. A hard working and determined man, he finished the projects he would start.
An outdoorsman, Al loved to be in the wilderness hunting for coon, deer and rabbit. Also, he enjoyed playing football and baseball in high school and continued to love those sports throughout his life.
Very dependable, family and friends knew they could turn to Al when they were in need. Al regularly plowed driveways, lended his tools or helped in any way he could.
A family man, his family is what meant the most to Al. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and the “light of his life” was his grandson, Brady. His family and friends will miss him dearly.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife; son: Adam Jordan of Chesterville; daughter: Carrie Jordan and her son Brady of Mount Gilead; five sisters: Norma (Wilbert) Oler of Columbus, Anna (Ben) Mahan, Emma (Butch) Chipps, both of Chesterville, Robin (Dave) Lester of Iberia; and Vicki (Jeff) Sargent of Fredericktown; two brothers: Bruce (Judy) Jordan of Cardington, and Vern (Toni) Jordan of Marengo; two special aunts: Helen Poling of Marysville and Emma Grau of Mansfield; father and mother-in-law: Mavis and Omar Sutherland of Mount Gilead; sisters-in-law: Kay (Dale) Clever of Galion and Peggy Jaggers of Marion; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many very good friends and neighbors.
In addition to his father in 1984, Al was preceded in death by his brother: Donald Bowers in 2003; and by his step-father: Raymond Stone in 2003.
The family will greet friends on Monday from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 South Main Street, Mount Gilead, where funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastors Jeannie Winters and Joe Sopher officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Chesterville.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Brady Mermann Scholarship Fund and those donations may be sent to the funeral home.
