Albert “Babe” Mazza, age 86, of Colonial Woods Drive, Mount Vernon, passed away on Friday September 12, 2008 at his home. He was born on February 6, 1922 in Clarksburg, West Virginia to the late Samual and Rosa (Belloti) Mazza. A proud West Virginian, Babe graduated from Washington Irving High School in Clarksburg, West Virginia and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He received his Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree in Education from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. Babe taught, coached basketball and served as Athletic Director over his 35-year career that began at Ceredo-Kenova High School in West Virginia (1948-57), South Pointe High School in Ohio (1957-59) and Northeast High School in Fort Lauderdale Florida (1960-83). While attending Marshall University Babe played on the basketball team and is still a member of the Marshall M Club, a club for all past Marshall University athletes. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. In retirement, Babe was an avid fisherman, golfer, harness racing fan, “gentleman” farmer and sports enthusiast. Babe personally mentored and influenced thousands of students and athletes in his 35 years of teaching and coaching. He will be sadly missed by many lifelong friends and was known as a true gentleman on and off the court.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Margaret (Byrne) Mazza, a son, John (Barbara) Mazza of Atlanta, Georgia, a daughter, Cathy (Bob) Berkowitz of Miami, Florida, two grandchildren, Matt and Annie Berkowitz, many nieces, nephews and cousins and his feline companion Molly.

Besides his parents babe was preceded in death by five brothers, Joseph Mazza, John Mazza, Anthony Mazza, Angelo “Hank” Mazza, Frank Mazza and two sisters, Flora Iaquinta and Anna Julian.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 5 to 8 PM at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home where a prayer service will be held on Wednesday at 10 AM. Rev. Father Mark J. Hammond will be officiating. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Ohio.
