John S. Bailes

September 03, 1942 ‒ April 23, 2017

Sunbury, Ohio

John S. Bailes, age 74 of Sunbury, passed away after a brief illness Sunday, April 23, 2017 at Riverside Hospital.

He was born September 3, 1942 in Victor, West Virginia to the late John S. Bailes, Sr. and Buelah (Eagle) Bailes.  John worked over 30 years as a maintenance technician for the Anheuser-Busch Company, and previously as a tool & die operator. A U.S. Navy veteran, John was a lifetime member of the Delaware Amvets and VFW, a member of the American Legion, and the Delaware Eagles and Moose Lodges.

John and his beloved wife of 24 years, Karen (Edwards) Bailes, loved to travel, particularly by cruise ship, and spent their winters after retirement in Florida.  Special memories of their time together include John’s particular fondness for cruise ship soft-serve ice cream and his penchant for wearing his beloved “Gilligan” hat. Lifelong friendships were also made while cruising. A family man at heart, John enjoyed playing dominos, poker, fishing, and gardening, and was known as a very good and loving Grandpa.

With a reputation for being a hard worker, John was independent and took pride in his work, home, and property. One of his proudest achievements was making it to an enjoyable and fulfilling retirement with Karen. He leaves a legacy of love for his wife and family.

In addition to his wife Karen, he is survived by sons John (Janet) Bailes, Jr. of Ft. Worth, Texas and Tim Bailes of Delaware; daughters Lucinda (Reece) Wiseman of Granville; Sylvia (James) Clarkson of Columbus; stepson Michael (Mandi) McDonald of St. Louisville; and stepdaughter Debra (Allan) Swisher of Gahanna, along with nine grandchildren: Gerad Bailes, Derrick Swisher, Dylan McDonald, Leah McDonald, Tara McDonald, Alaina Wiseman, and Caidan, Wesley, and Layla Clarkson, and two great-grandchildren, Salem McDonald and Alexis Bailes. He is also survived by brother Robert (Debra) Bailes of Ellenton, Florida, and sisters Lois Jett (Roland) of Spencer, West Virginia and Annabelle (Homer) Daugherty of Looneyville, West Virginia. Special friends Curtis and Laura Troxell of Palmetto, Florida and John and Carol Burchett of Sunbury, along with his beloved Maltese, Pepper, will also miss John.

Preceding John in death are brother S. Dale Bailes and sisters Jane Rupe and Judy Goins.

Services will be held Thursday, April 27th at 1:00 p.m., at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home in Sunbury, with Pastor Larry DeWitt officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Sunbury Memorial Park. Friends may call on the family from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
