Mozelle I. Benson
May 03, 1927 ‒ August 30, 2004
BELLVILLE: Mozelle I. Benson, 77, of Fitting Avenue, Bellville, died Monday afternoon, August 30, 2004 in The Laurels of Mount Vernon following a short illness.
She was born May 3, 1927 in Marion, to Herman and Rossie (Kirch) Haas, and was graduated from Marion Harding High School in 1945.
On May 11, 1947 she married Ralph Owen Benson, and shortly thereafter, they moved to Mansfield, and in 1958 on to Bellville, which would become their lifelong home. Ralph preceded her in death on March 29, 1996.
Mozelle had been an advisor for the former Clear Fork Belles 4-H Club, and was a member and past president of Irvin Hiskey Unit #535 American Legion Auxiliary.
A talented pianist, and member of the Bellville United Methodist Church, she accompanied worship services at the church for many years. She also served the congregation by accompanying the Junior Choir, singing in the adult choir, and had been currently serving on the Pastor Relations Board.
Mozelle also served as the accompanist for the Gatton Rocks Gospel Singing Group.
Somewhat of a fixture in downtown Bellville, she worked at Keil’s Department Store for many years, several of those years as manager.
Around Bellville she was known as the “Tab Lady” – for her habit and service of collecting aluminum soda can tabs and recycling them for money, which she sent to Jimmy Crum’s Recreation Unlimited Program.
She was also known as “the Puzzle Lady” for her hobby of working jigsaw puzzles and exchanging them with other puzzlers.
She spent countless happy hours as a member of the “Fun Bunch”, based in Mount Vernon…and also with her morning coffee group at the American Legion.
Mozelle was a gifted sewer, crocheter, knitter and quilter, having made both afghans and quilts for her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter Karen S. Schwanekamp of Westerville; her son and daughter-in-law Dennis O. and Terri Benson of Bellville; four grandchildren John Benson of Columbus, Mick Benson of Bellville, Christopher and his wife Jamie Schwanekamp of Westerville and Jennifer Schwanekamp of Cincinnati; Philip Wilson of New Albany, whom she also considered her grandson; two great grandchildren Rachel and Owen Schwanekamp; her brother and sister-in-law Gail and Elaine Haas of Ontario; extended family; and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 1, 2004 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home, where the funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 am. The Rev. Jerry Wolleson will officiate. Burial will follow in Forest Cemetery, Fredericktown.
Memorial contributions to the Jefferson Township-Bellville Rescue Squad or the Bellville United Methodist Church may be made at the funeral home.
