Matthew William Southerland

June 30, 1982 ‒ September 06, 2008

Prospect, Ohio

Matthew William “Mattie” Southerland, age 26, of Prospect, died unexpectedly on Saturday, September 6, 2008, at his home.

He was born in Delaware, Ohio, on June 30, 1982, the son of Vivian (Williams) Southerland of Prospect. Matt graduated from Elgin High School in the Class of 2001.

An avid Ohio State University fan, Matt loved to watch and place friendly wagers on his beloved Buckeyes. His fun-loving nature made game day festivities entertaining for everyone.

Having a very competitive spirit, Matt enjoyed paintball matches with the “Ben and Bridgett” team. He also looked forward to yearly trips to Lake Cumberland, where he would free dive for rocks to take home and put in his mother’s rock garden.

A supportive uncle, Matt could be heard throughout the arena when he got animated while cheering on his nephew, Kyle, during his hockey matches.

Having “the biggest heart in the world,” Matt was always eager to lend a helping hand to his family and friends, never expecting anything in return.

With a love for all animals, Matt dearly missed his beloved American Bulldog, Snoop.

Mattie will be dearly missed by his devoted and loving mother, Vivian Southerland; father figure and beloved friend, David Beddow, both of Prospect; sister, Michelle (Eric) Majher, of Hilliard; brother and roommate, Mark May, of Prospect; nephew, Kyle Majher, of Hilliard; two aunts: Holly (Phil) McGeorge, and Judy Williams, both of Marion; two uncles: Ron (Jill) Williams and Bobby (Rosie) Williams, both of Prospect; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his brother and best friend, Gerry Southerland Jr., and loving grandparents, Robert and June Williams.

The Southerland family will greet friends on Wednesday from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion, where services celebrating his life will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Waldo Cemetery. For his services, the family requests everyone who attends to either wear a tuxedo or Ohio State attire.

Pallbearers serving will be Kyle and Eric Majher, Tony Beddow, Shane Price, Kenny Edwards, and Mark May.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the family in care of the funeral home.
