Dr. Charles William Sherman, age 87 of Galena and longtime Westerville Optometrist passed away at home Thursday evening, August 11, 2011.

He was born on July 11, 1924 in Shadeville to the late Melvin and Thelma (Rawlins) Sherman. A graduate of Harlem High School, “Bill” proudly served in the US Navy during WW II. He earned a degree from The Ohio State University, College of Optometry. Dr. Sherman retired from his private practice after 45 years.

He enjoyed his pipe and was a fan of the Cincinnati Reds. He was an avid thoroughbred horseman and breeder.

He is survived by his wife and faithful companion of 65 years: Paula (Danna) Sherman, son: Danny Sherman of Galena, daughter: Bonita (Eric) Martindale of Sunbury, Grandchildren: Samantha (Elijah) Melvin, Brandon, Eric, Great-granddaughter: Sophia, Step-Grandchildren: Shelia (Brad) Reckner, Shana Martindale, Step-Great-grandchildren: Dean and Trey. Also survived by Brother: Dr. Harry (Ruth) Sherman of Washington.

He was preceded in death by sister Betty Garee and brothers Lynn and Melvin Sherman.

Friends may call Monday 6-8 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR’s 3 at 61, Sunbury. Graveside services will be held Tuesday 11:00 a.m. at Blendon Central Cemetery in Westerville with Pastor John Dotson officiating.
