Dorothy L. Braden

Dorothy L. Braden, age 89, of Mount Gilead, passed away Monday morning, April 1, 2013, at her home surrounded by her family.
On June 19, 1923, Dorothy was born in Grover Hill, Ohio, the daughter of the late Elvy Ray and Violet Mae (Lape) Swank.
In 1943, Dorothy married E. Joe Wein. Together they had five children before he preceded her in death on January 14, 1961. She spent the next several years working hard to provide for and take care of her children. On October 6, 1977, she took a second chance at love and married Robert E. Braden, who preceded her in death on September 1, 2005.
Over the years, Dorothy worked many jobs. She was a housekeeper, worked at Dogwood Valley Campgrounds for 30 years, and also cleaned many local doctors’ offices. At different times she also did laundry for a dry cleaner and helped her family run a gas station.
A woman of faith, Dorothy attended the Mount Gilead Church of Christ. She was also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the Moose Lodge in North Baltimore.
In her spare time, Dorothy enjoyed spending time outdoors watching the squirrels and birds. She also spent a lot of time sewing, canning, and tending to her garden.
Dorothy will be dearly missed by two daughters: Mary (Ray) Mullen of Shawnee, OK, Ila (Lon) Combs of Galion; an “adopted son,” G. Allen Kessler of West Virginia; 17 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; a sister, Lois (Robert) Knorr of Fort Wayne, IN; and a son-in-law, Jim Bush of Chesterville.
In addition to her two husbands and her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by a son, Edwin L. Wien; two daughters: Joan S. Bush, Norma Richey; two grandchildren: Tina Loree Mullen and Myron L. Clark; two brothers: Harold and Scott Swank; three sisters: Pauline Spitznaugle, Iris Mae Swank, and Lucille Burggrave; and her step-father, Ed Walters.
Dorothy’s family will greet friends from 10 – 11 a.m. on Friday, April 5, 2013, at the Mount Gilead Church of Christ, 322 Iberia St., Mount Gilead. A memorial service honoring her life will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Doug Bryan and Pastor John Yust officiating.
