David W. Geiger
October 25, 1942 ‒ December 08, 2012
Mount Vernon, Ohio
David Geiger, 70, of Mount Vernon, passed away Saturday, December 08, 2012 at The Ohio State University Medical Center. David was a devoted son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend. He spent much of his life teaching and coaching football, cross country, and track and field.
David grew up in New Concord, Ohio, the second son of Rhea and Carlos Geiger. After earning a degree from Muskingum College in 1964, he began his teaching career at Centerburg High School, where he also served as the head coach of the football and track and field teams. He met his wife and soul mate when they both taught at the same district. He later went on to teach health and earth sciences at Roosevelt Jr. High School in Newark, OH for 25 years, and coached high school athletes there for several years.
After retirement David continued to coach cross country and track and field as a volunteer at Mount Vernon High School, Kenyon College, and for the last 12 years, Fredericktown Schools. His specialty was coaching the long jump and high jump, and he led many young people over the years to compete in the State Championship Meet. He enjoyed working with all of his athletes, not just the “champions,” never turning away a young person who wished to try the sport. In his free time he loved to do the daily crossword puzzle and travel with his wife in their motorhome. He was an avid reader and believed that one should always be learning new things no matter what their age. He also loved to run and competed in several road races each year, sometimes going months without missing a day of running.
David would say that his greatest accomplishments are his children, Lori Geiger (James) Krych, Robert (Christine) Geiger, and Julia Geiger. He was always there for anything his children needed and was a devoted and loving father. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Leah (Stamper) Geiger, his mother Rhea Geiger of New Concord, his brother Robert (Laura) Geiger of Gnadenhutten, and a sister, Phyllis Reasoner of Story, Wyoming. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Zachary Geiger, Brandon and Jack Krych, and Emma and Brenden Reed.
