George F. Lane, age 88 of Galena passed away Saturday evening, May 8, 2010 surrounded by his family.
He was born September 21, 1921 on the family farm in Condit to the late Fenton G. and Vinnie E. (Fisher) Lane. A graduate of Sunbury High School in 1939, he played on the football team and always enjoyed reminiscing at the class reunions. He was a US Army Veteran serving briefly during WW II.
George worked 44 years with Producers Livestock Assoc. A career which began in the Columbus stock yards, he then spent 25 years as manager of the Mt. Vernon stockyards. He was transferred to the Columbus corporate office in 1966 as manager of the hog sales department and director of operations, retiring in 1988. His success was shown by the loyalty of numerous treasured friendships in the farming community.
A member of Condit Presbyterian Church, he prided himself in his homestead. He enjoyed gardening; flowers and vegetables, as well as manicuring his landscape and lawn.
Survived by son: Don (Lisa) Lane of Cincinnati, daughter: Susan (Brian) Howlett of Hacienda Heights, CA, 4 Grandchildren: Lawrence and Michael (Juliet) Howlett, Brian and Douglas Lane (fiancée Laura Maynard). Sister-in-law: Virginia Ihle of Sunbury, dear friend Leda Walker, and a host of special nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his wife of 53 years: Erdene (Buck) in 1998, brother Robert and sister Margaret Kletrovets.
Friends may call Wednesday 4-8 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR’s 3 at 61, Sunbury where a service celebrating the life of George Lane will be Thursday 10:30 a.m., interment will follow in Trenton Cemetery
