“There will never be another man like him.” Those words were often used to describe Bob Ramsey…who was truly one of a kind.
Robert E. “Bob” Ramsey, age 73, of Edison, died early Tuesday morning, November 3, 2009, at the Morrow County Hospital Extended Care Facility following over a courageous five year battle with several types of cancer.
On January 17, 1936, Robert was born in Marion, Ohio, the son of the late Clyde and K. Gail (Macaninch) Ramsey. He graduated from Edison High School in the Class of 1954.
Following high school, Bob graduated from the Ohio State University’s Barber School program. Upon returning to Morrow County, he opened his first barber shop at the age of 19 in Mount Gilead. He was best known for his shop in Edison, the “Edison Barber Shop” and for being the best at cutting a flat top. After cutting hair for well over 50 years, he was forced to hang up his clippers because of his illnesses.
In addition to owning and operating his barber shops, Bob also drove truck for over twenty eight years. He made pickups and deliveries all throughout the United States for several companies and for himself, as he owned his own truck for many years, and he was a retired teamster.
Back in high school, a young lady and cheerleader by the name of Prudence Tennant, caught his eye. Despite not having the opportunity to connect during their high school years, when the opportunity finally arose later in life, Bob did not miss this chance. He and Prudence were married on September 28, 1980, at their home, and they loved each other’s company for over twenty nine years. Together they had also enjoyed living in Lake Wales, Florida, for seven years.
Always hard at work, Bob “never sat still” and he never waited to do the things he wanted.
Having been raised on a farm, Bob inherited a love for antique tractors. He loved the challenge of finding an unused tractor and restoring it to be as good as new. Also, he was a member of the Morrow County Antique Tractor Association.
A “Harley man,” Bob enjoyed taking day long rides all throughout Ohio to attend various shows and sites.
With a love of fishing, Bob looked forward to taking his boat and motor home to Lake Erie, where he would fish from dawn till dusk.
To say Bob was ornery would definitely be an understatement, as he loved to mercifully tease his friends and family. He also had little ornery sayings for every occasion.
When he was younger, Bob was a member of the Denmark United Methodist Church, and more recently had attended the Edison United Methodist Church. Bob was also a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, and a 32nd Degree Mason with the Mount Gilead Masonic Lodge #206 – Denmark.
Bob will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, Prudence Ramsey of Edison; two daughters: Roberta Harruff of Cardington, and her two sons: Dustin (Missy) Hall and Dillon Harruff; and Heather (Jeff) Hawk of Edison, and their children: Rachel and Kurt Hawk; one son, John (Roxanne) Ramsey of Galion, and their children: Stacy (Shawn) Newton, and Heather Ramsey; four great-grandchildren: Sydney, Zachary, Haylee and Caden; one sister, Rosemary (Jack) Frost of Florida; one niece: Rhonda (Don) Graham of Mount Gilead; one nephew, Ron Poland of Illinois; and several great nieces and nephews.
The Ramsey family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Friday, November 6, 2009, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead, where Masonic services will follow at 7:15 p.m. Services celebrating Bob’s life will be held on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor John Shirley officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Morrow County, 228 South St., Mount Gilead, Ohio 43338, and the Morrow County Antique Tractor Association, c/o Gary Frazier, 6656 St. Rt. 288, Galion, 44833.
