Cecil C. Davis, age 64, of McManis Road, Mount Vernon, died Tuesday September 29, 2009 at his residence following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Cecil was born January 14, 1945 at Watkins Branch, Grundy, Virginia and moved to Knox County in 1952. He was a graduate of Howard High School, had been employed at Pittsburgh Plate Glass Industries in Mount Vernon and retired in 2002 from the Anheuser-Busch Company in Columbus.
Cecil is survived by Carole Newton (a former Fredericktown resident) his companion for the past 14 years and the love of his life; surviving spouse, Susan (McMahon) Davis of Mount Vernon, his mother Edith E. (Stiltner) Davis Harris of Mount Vernon; his son Craig W. Davis of Chicago, Illinois; his stepdaughter Adina (David) Ryan of Mount Vernon; 4 granddaughters Ashli Nixon, Whitney Mentzer, Brooke Mentzer and Kristen Davis; his son-in-law Russ Mentzer of Mount Vernon; brother Neil C. (Alice) Davis of Danville, brother Rev. Roy L. Davis of Millwood, sister May K. (Mack) Davis Street of Georgia, brother Dorse W. (Darlene) Davis of Fredericktown, sister Zella A. (David, Ret. Major USAF) Davis Toney of Mount Vernon, sister E. Louise (Keith) Davis Carroll of Ocoee, Tennessee; 5 nephews; 6 nieces; aunt Caroline Sturgeon and uncle George Stiltner both of Grundy, Virginia; uncle Arthur (Gladys) Davis of Mount Vernon; and special friend Don Givens of Columbus. Cecil was preceded in death by his father Cecil M. Davis, his brother Arland Davis, maternal grandparents Everett and Vicie Stiltner, and paternal grandparents William and Ruth Alafare Davis.
Cecil was a devoted member of The Old Country Church on State Route 62, near Millwood, where he enjoyed leading the singing. He loved his home which he helped build. Cecil shared a special love with his mother. He spent a great deal of time outdoors mowing, gardening, feeding the wild birds, deer and stray cats. He also enjoyed driving his pickup truck. Cecil had a wonderful sense of humor, often giving nicknames to those he loved. In recent years, Cecil and Carole enjoyed their winters in Arizona.
Friends may call Friday from 5pm to 8pm at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home 619 East High Street, Mount Vernon, Ohio. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Workman Cemetery in Danville.
