Nellie Berniece (Naylor) Southard, 96, of Mount Gilead, Ohio died Friday evening at the Rosewood Manor in Galion.

She was born in Shelby County, Missouri on November 24, 1909, the daughter of the late William and Lula (Carroll) Naylor. She enjoyed playing basketball in high school on one of the first all girls teams.

She attended teaching college in Kirksville, Missouri where she met and married Dr. Alonzo F. Southard. They spent over 50 years together until his death in 1988.

Coming to Mount Gilead in 1932 they opened Doctorís osteopathic office and her podiatry practice where they worked for many years. Berniece loved music and attended The Ohio State University becoming a circuit teacher of music throughout many one room school houses in central Ohio. She followed her dream into the sky and received her pilots license in the early 40ís.

In 1964 Dogwood Valley Campground was carved out of the woods of their homeís backyard. Berniece enjoyed the fellowship of many friends, music, and crafts.

She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Motherís Forum, Wayside Garden Club, and the Silver Twig at Morrow County Hospital. She taught crafts and organized the weekly Sunday services at Dogwood Valley. She was an avid collector of numerous things; especially lifelong friendships.

Berniece is survived by two sons Stanley Southard and William Southard and their spouses Cecelia Heinz and Kathy Southard all of Mount Gilead, Ohio; a foster daughter Marcella (Van) Swearingen of Shelbina, Missouri; a granddaughter Bethany (Gordon) Southard Grissom; and 2 great grandchildren, Bradley and Brooklyn Grissom of Colorado Springs, Colorado, 8 nieces, and many great nieces and nephews.

Her husband Dr. A.F. Southard, whom she married on May 1, 1932, preceded her in death on Nov. 29, 1988. An infant daughter Carolyn Southard, a foster daughter Nancy Jordan, and two brothers Charles and Lewis Naylor also preceded her in death.

Friends may call at the Craven Funeral Home, 67 North Main Street, Mount Gilead, on Tuesday March 14, 2006 from 2-4 and 6-8. The Rev. Bruce Hartley will conduct funeral services at the Trinity United Methodist Church on Wednesday at 11:00 am. Burial will follow in Rivercliff Cemetery in Mount Gilead.
