LEXINGTON: Adventure is not outside a man; it is within. It's not that Kip Calendine was easily bored, it was his constant pursuit of adventure that kept him active and alive. From riding motorcycles to piloting planes and ultralights, to restoring Model A Fords, Kip kept life interesting turning life's ventures into exciting adventures.

Kip embarked on his greatest adventure Sunday morning June 30, 2013, as he went to the presence of the Lord from MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. He was 76.

Born January 27, 1937 in Columbus to Nelson F. and Kathryn (Tucker) Calendine, after a short stay in Wisconsin, the family settled in Lexington.

He was graduated from Lexington High School in 1955, and it was there in high school that he caught sight of a fine young lady: Janet Walker. Kip talked his whole family into attending the Lexington Church of Christ...so he could see more of Janet. They were married August 15, 1957 and remained in Lexington to raise their family. At the Lexington church, Kip served as deacon, and was active with the building committee – and the building crew – when the current building was erected.

Kip worked more than 35 years as a tool and die maker with General Motors, and was a member of UAW Local #549.

His adventures included serving as a olunteer fireman with the Troy Township-Lexington Fire Department, and earning his pilot's license. He spent countless hours restoring his 1930 Victoria Model A (“Vickie” he'd call her) and Janet's 1931 yellow Model A Cabriolet (though he never really let Janet drive it!).

A member of First Alliance Church, Kip served the congregation as a sound technician for more than 20 years.

Kip was the kind of man who was up for any project – always willing to help family and friends. Described as a craftsman, he could do anything, fix anything, build anything. Of the many things he built, Kip put together a fine Christian and loving family, reflective of his own soft heart and sincere love.

The family that he dearly loves includes his wife Janet; their children Jodi & J. Neal Smith of Overland Park, KA, Dr. Stephen & Kara Calendine of Colorado Springs, CO, Jill Maihle of Marion and Dr. Philip & Bethany Calendine of Mansfield; grandchildren Dr. Stephanie & Isaac Crabtree, Brian Smith and Brandon Smith all of Overland Park, KS, Kip Calendine of Los Angeles, CA, Quinn Calendine of Colorado Springs, CO, Zane Calendine of Huntington Beach, CA, Gage Calendine of Colorado Springs, CO, Josh Maihle and Matt Maihle both of Fredericktown, Paige Calendine, Phoebe Calendine, Skyler Calendine, Dawson Calendine and Walker Calendine all of Mansfield; great grandchildren Caleb and Austin Crabtree; sisters and brothers-in-law Carol & Ken Klintworth of Oshkosh, WI, Sylvia & Jack Wheeler of Mansfield, Nancy & Myron Hamilton of Lexington, Laura & George Volz of Lexington, Diane & Don Winemiller of Mansfield and Amy & Dan Arnett of Mansfield; sister-in-law Bonnie Calendine of Elyria; numerous nieces and nephews; a large extended family; and his lifelong friend Gerald Griffeth.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother Richard; a sister Kathy Calendine and a brother Brian Calendine.

The Calendine family will receive friends Friday, July 5, 2013 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. A service of worship to God and in celebration of the life and adventures of Kip Calendine will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in First Alliance Church, 291 West Cook Road, Mansfield. Pastors Steve Burggraf, David Phillips and Brian Mosher will speak. Private inurnment will be in Lexington Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to First Alliance Church “Transformed” Youth Ministry may be made at the funeral home.
