Velma N. Hicks, age 62 of Sunbury and originally from Galena passed away Friday, August 3, 2012 at Delaware Court.
Born on October 19, 1949 in Galena to the late Webster “Bud” and Viola (Carpenter) Potts, she was the third generation of her family born in their beloved Galena. A graduate of Big Walnut High School in 1967, she worked as a medical assistant for a doctor’s office in Columbus. She then worked as a cashier at Townley’s IGA and as a childcare assistant with Noah’s Ark in Sunbury. Velma also took a devoted interest in children by opening up her home to care for the children of her family, friends, and neighbors.
She married Marshall “Lee” Hicks in 1970 and together they shared 34 years until his unexpected passing in 2004.
Velma was a member of a supportive non denominational Christian home church. Always social, she loved being around people, especially her extended and church families. She possessed a jovial personality, constantly showing concern for others and interest in their well being. A trait that served her well throughout her life, as she never knew a stranger.
Velma loved to sing hymns, played the piano by both ear and sight and also played the accordion and guitar. She enjoyed crocheting and playing card games, especially Rook. She kept a diary of her life journey and authored a number of poems. She was a true gem, who sparkled in countless ways; her humor, wit, and presence made the world a better place.
Those left to cherish her memory include: son John (Kirsten) Hicks of Gahanna daughters: Leslie Hicks of Gahanna, Rebekah Hicks of Delaware, precious granddaughter: Lillian Marie, sisters Dora (Merle) Taylor of Zanesville, Joyce (Arden) Knight of Navarre, brother Verle (Anne) Potts of Cardington,.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by brother David Potts in 1978.
Friends may call Monday 5-8 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR’s 3 at 61, Sunbury, where services will be held Tuesday 10:00, interment will follow in Galena Cemetery.
