For Pappy Hoffman there were only two good times to go fishing: when the sun was shining – and when it wasn’t. Even a bad day spent at Lake Erie was better than the day spent anywhere else.

Pappy Hoffman passed away late Thursday evening in his home in Logan. He was 82.

Born Merle Thomas Hoffman on April 13, 1930 in Mansfield to Albert and Marie Hoffman, he spent all of his life in Ohio, with the exception of the years he spent with the U.S. Army, serving his country in the Korean War.

Though he enjoyed fishing, Pappy spent most of his time working. He had owned and operated a downtown Mansfield bar by the name of “Maw & Paw’s” and later operated a nearby restaurant. He also worked as a press operator at the Tappan Stove Company, worked the oil fields of Texas and even farmed for years. Pappy had a strong work ethic – he was always busy.

He is survived his children Rick (Robyn) Hoffman of Pataskala, and Mark (Rita) Hoffman and Vicki Gavin all of Reynoldsburg; grandchildren Brian Hoffman, Brad (Katie) Hoffman, Brandon Hoffman, Heather Rader, Josh Rader and Brent (Crystal) Hoffman; great grandchildren Ella Hoffman, Zach Wills, Alex Wills, Brooklynn Rader, Destiny Hoffman and Trent Hoffman; siblings Margaret Dolce, Esther Foreman, Donna May Wymers, Donald, Raymond, Dwane, Bill and James Hoffman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Eula Jean (McKee) Hoffman; and siblings Eileen Mains, and Glen, Albert and Ed Hoffman.

The Hoffman family will receive friends Tuesday, August 7, 2012 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where his memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. Celebrant Jerry Wilson will officiate. Military honors will be courtesy of the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail.

A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, August 11, 2012 at his grandson’s home 10350 Webb Road, Logan, OH 43138 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Contributions to the Pappy Hoffman Memorial Fund may be made at the funeral home.
