Dick Heston was one of the few guys who could live off the land. He didn't need a lot of sleep – an hour at night, a power nap, was all he needed to be refreshed. That left him plenty of time to stay busy. When not at his job, Dick stayed busy hunting and fishing. He'd hunt berries and mushrooms, go frog gigging or fishing, and spent an extreme amount of time coon hunting. Dick's hunting was not for sport, it was always done with a purpose.

An industrious and independent man, Dick Heston passed away Sunday morning July 29, 2012 in his Lexington home. He was 92.

Born July 18, 1920 near Lexington to Marion and Ethel (Milligan) Heston, Dick learned a strong work ethic at an early age. Due to his father's early death, Dick left high school and started working at Brumenshenkel's Farm to help his mother support the family.

He served with the U.S. Navy during WWII, stationed in the Pacific Theater. After the war he returned to his job at Farm Tools, Inc. as a tool & die maker. From there he went to Dominion Electric, and when General Motors opened the stamping plant in Ontario, Dick worked there until his retirement in 1985. It was there at GM, that Dick brought a roaster full of pulled coon meat for the “last-day-before-Christmas-break luncheon,” that became a company tradition.

Dick worked at a turkey farm, painted barns, and even came to the aid of the Village of Lexington, restoring water service when the water tower froze. He worked with precision and quality, and could do just about anything he put his mind to.

Dick helped found the Lexington Little League program and religiously followed Lexington High School sports. The official “Grandpa” of Decker's Depot in Lexington, Dick could be found there talking Lexington sports most mornings. In his retirement he became an avid Cleveland Indians fan.

For 30 years, he and his wife Annabelle kept a camper at Marblehead, so they could be close to their boat on Lake Erie. They held “Fish Ohio” badges for their Walleye catches.

He was a member of of Lexington Congregational Church, where he formerly served on council, and was a member of V.F.W. Post #5101.

He is survived by his wife Annabelle (Yarger) Heston, whom he married June 28, 1941; their son and daughter-in-law Robert & Ellie Heston of North Ridgeville; daughter and son-in-law Linda & John Barr of Jeromesville; grandsons Chris Barr of Columbus and Brent and his wife Leeanna Barr of Mantua; a great grandson Adam Richard Barr and a great granddaughter on the way; a sister Kathryn Brown of McConnellsville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Marion Heston and Ethel Heston Swigart; and siblings Leora Gaul, Mildred Foss, Martha Amato, Betty Thomas, Tootie Stevens and Jack Heston.

The Heston family will receive friends Tuesday, July 31, 2012 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where a service celebrating his life will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Memorial Park, where American Legion Post #353 will hold graveside military honors.

Contributions in Dick's memory to Lexington Congregational Church may be made at the funeral home.
