FREDERICKTOWN: Marlin “Red” Armstrong, age 85, of Fredericktown, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2012 in his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born March 27, 1926 in Richland County to Rolla and Mae (Swigart) Armstrong and was graduated from Lexington High School in 1944.

A U.S. Army veteran, Marlin served two years during WWII in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1947 with the rank of sergeant.

Marlin worked at General Motors Fisher Body Plant as a general supervisor in quality control for 28 years retiring in 1982. Known to his co-workers as Red, he stayed in touch with his buddies from work as a member of the retirees club of General Motors. After retirement, he spent 13 years in Okeechobee, Florida enjoying the sun and spending time with family.

A lifelong area resident, Marlin attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellville, and was a member of the American Legion in Fredericktown. He was active with “The Fun Bunch”, which derived from a grief support group.

He enjoyed golf especially at Little Apple with his retiree friends and family. Marlin was an extensive traveler, his sense of adventure taking him around the U.S. in a motor home. He also loved more lavish trips specifically cruises. He and Margie's most memorable were to Hawaii, Alaska, the Panama Canal, New England and the Caribbean. Coined the “Johnny Appleseed of Trees”, Marlin always took trees from the woods at his home to plant everywhere he went. He was a faithful participant in Arbor Day.

A pancreatic cancer survivor, he was proud to participate in Relay for Life.

Marlin inspired his family with his enthusiasm for life, and inviting smile. He will be remembered for his hard work ethic and fun loving personality.

Marlin is survived by his wife Margie (Ernsthausen Mitchell) Armstrong of Fredericktown, a son Don S. Armstrong of Dublin, two daughters Cheryl K. and Bill Smith of Perrysburg, and Marla J. and Jim Kochheiser of Lexington; three step daughters Sabrina “Carol” Pugh of Fredericktown, Becky Mitchell of Cleveland and Patty Tinney of Hilliard, a step son Rob Mitchell of Marengo; five grandchildren, seven step grandchildren, two step great grandchildren, a brother Kenneth and Jean Armstrong of Fredericktown, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Cynthia L. (Smith) Armstrong in 1996, and a son David R. Armstrong in 2000, a step granddaughter Caitlin Pugh, and siblings Bertha Ridenour, Leland Armstrong, Ruby Garber, Florence Jensen, Elsie Mowry, and Emery Armstrong.

Pretorius will officiate and military honors conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will follow at the funeral home. Interment will be in Lexington Cemetery.
