Walter R. Wagner, age 85, of Mount Vernon, died Thursday January 3, 2002 at the Whispering Hills Care Center in Mount Vernon. Walter was born April 24, 1916 in Monroe Township, Knox County to Clarence and Winnie (Smith) Wagner. He was a 1934 graduate of Howard High School, and had spent his lifetime in the Mount Vernon area. Walter retired in 1977 from the Mount Vernon Fire Department where he had been employed for 33 years. He was the oldest member of the Retired Police and Fire Fighters Association in Mount Vernon.

Walter was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon and attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Mount Vernon. He was also active with the Gideons.

Surviving are his wife Helen (Mills) Wagner whom he married June 26, 1938; two sons Ronald (Sheila) Wagner of Chillicothe and David (Glenna) Wagner of Mount Vernon; his daughter Beverly (Charles) Klinkert of Bucyrus; 8 grandchildren Kevin Wagner, Christopher Wagner, Steven Wagner, Susan Wagner, Lisa Wagner, Jill Smith, Annie Hemm and Julie Myers; 3 great grandchildren Staci, Seth, and Lily and his sister Ruth Sakala of Mount Vernon.

Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 PM at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home 619 East High Street, Mount Vernon where funeral services will be Monday at 2 PM with Rev. Paul Merki officiating. Burial will be in Mound View Cemetery.
