Donald I. "Don" Sherman, age 73, of Mount Gilead, died early Thursday morning, April 24, 2008, at the Morrow County Hospital following a brief illness.
On May 28, 1934, Don was born at home in Chesterville, Ohio, the son of the late Fostor and Blanche (Hair) Sherman. Later, he graduated from Chesterville High School in the Class of 1953.
Shortly after graduation, Don married his sweetheart, Karen Wharton, on May 29, 1954. Together they shared a love of camping, fishing trips to Canada, and driving to Florida for the winter. They had attended the Pulaskiville Community Bible Church.
A very skilled workman, Don started working as an independent contractor laying brick and block, called Sherman Masonry for eighteen years. His skill can be seen throughout Morrow County on work he had done, such as the Leaf Restaurant for which he laid all the brick.
Having been raised on a farm, Don always aspired to farm again. When his body grew tired of laying block, he turned to his farming roots and for over ten years he raised livestock and grew grain. With his livestock, Don had raised Corriedale Sheep, a fondness he shared with his family.
"As a jack of all trades," next Don pursued operating his own excavating business until last fall. He was especially proud of the pond he built for his wife and family to enjoy.
With an ability to "fix or repair anything," Don was everyone’s first call when something needed fixed.
A willing volunteer for Franklin Township, Don ran the grader many days and nights to clear the snowfall for his township.
Don loved to hunt and teach the younger generations some of his hunting skills. Always funloving Don was known as "Picky Pa Pa" for his merciless teasing. Nevertheless, children would "light up" when they saw Don coming for they loved his ornery nature.
An "overwhelmingly generous man" with his time and resources, Don would give even if it was at his own expense.
"The rock of the family," when anyone needed help or advice they would "holler for Don." They knew they could count on him.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Karen; a daughter, Kathy Robinson of Fredericktown; two sons: Dan (Nicole) Sherman, and Dale (Connie) Sherman, both of Mount Gilead; nine grandchildren: Amanda (Jeff) Bump, Brent (Stacy) Robinson, Galen and Garrett Robinson, Daniel Sherman, Raven (Daniel) Prine, Samantha, Kristina and Victoria Sherman; seven great-grandchildren: Treah, McKayla, McKenzie, McKennah, Joey, J.C., and Lane; a brother, Dean (Delores) Sherman of Fredericktown; three sisters: Lela (Jim) Looker of Fredericktown, Linda (Larry) Packer of Ontario, and Letha (Al) George of Delaware; two brothers-in-law: Roger (Sheryl) Gilmore of Navarre, FL, and Phil Gilmore of Bucyrus; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant son, Duane Sherman; and infant brother, Dewey Sherman.
His family will greet friends on Sunday from 2 – 6 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead, where services celebrating his life will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Marvin Gassman officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Morrow County Chapter of the American Red Cross, 37 W. Center St., Mount Gilead, Ohio 43338.
